Example IELTS Speaking Test 1 : An Important Event

An Important Event

Part 1

Time: 4-5 minutes

Now, in this first part of the test I'm going to ask you some questions about yourself.

Are you a student or do you work now?

I’m currently working as a software engineer in a dynamic tech firm. The job involves creating innovative solutions for complex problems, which I find both challenging and rewarding.

Why did you choose this course/job?

I chose this profession because of my passion for technology and innovation. From a young age, I was fascinated by how software shapes our daily lives, and this role allows me to contribute meaningfully to that process.

Talk about your daily routine.

My day begins with an early morning workout to energize myself for the day ahead. At work, I typically start by prioritizing tasks and attending a team meeting. The rest of my day is a blend of coding, problem-solving, and collaborating with colleagues. In the evening, I dedicate some time to personal development, such as reading or learning a new skill.

Is there anything about your course/job you would like to change?

One thing I would like to improve in my job is the frequency of team-building activities. While the work environment is professional, I believe fostering deeper personal connections among colleagues could significantly enhance collaboration and creativity.

Who does most of the shopping in your household?

In my household, my mother takes care of most of the shopping, as she is highly organized and ensures we get everything we need. However, I occasionally help with grocery shopping or purchasing personal items.

What type of shopping do you like? (Why?)

I enjoy online shopping because it’s convenient and allows me to compare products and prices effortlessly. It also saves time, especially when I’m looking for specific items like books or electronics.

Is shopping a popular activity in your country? (Why/why not?)

Yes, shopping is extremely popular in my country. It’s not just a necessity but also a form of recreation. Many people enjoy visiting shopping malls or markets, as they provide an opportunity to socialize and explore a variety of products.

What type of shops do teenagers like best in your country?

Teenagers in my country are particularly drawn to fashion stores and technology outlets. They enjoy keeping up with the latest trends in clothing and gadgets, which are seen as a way to express their personality and interests.

How often do you go to the cinema?

I go to the cinema about once a month, especially when a new blockbuster or critically acclaimed film is released. It’s a great way to unwind and enjoy an immersive viewing experience.

What type of films do you like best? (Why?)

I prefer thought-provoking dramas and psychological thrillers because they challenge my perspective and keep me engaged with intricate storylines and compelling characters.

What type of films don’t you like? (Why not?)

I’m not particularly fond of slapstick comedies, as I find their humor overly exaggerated and lacking depth. I tend to gravitate toward films with meaningful plots and well-crafted dialogues.

Part 2

Time: 3-4 minutes

Now, I'm going to give you a topic and I'd like you to talk about it for 1-2 minutes.

Before you talk you'll have one minute to think about what you are going to say and you can make notes if you wish. Do you understand?

Ok, here's some paper and a pencil to make notes, and here is your topic. I'd like you to describe something you own which is very important to you.

Describe an important event in your life

One of the most significant events in my life was graduating from university, which took place in May 2020. I was with my family, close friends, and classmates, all of whom had supported me throughout my academic journey.

On the day of the ceremony, I remember feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness as I walked across the stage to receive my degree. It was an incredible moment of accomplishment and recognition for all the hard work and dedication I had put into my studies.

This event is especially important to me because it marked a turning point in my life. It symbolized the end of one chapter and the beginning of another, as I transitioned into the professional world. It also reinforced the value of perseverance and the support of loved ones in achieving my goals.

Follow-up questions

Do you still think about this event often?

Yes, I reflect on it frequently, especially during challenging times. It reminds me of what I’m capable of achieving when I stay focused and determined.

Can the other people involved remember this event?

Absolutely, my family and friends often recall that day fondly. It was not only a personal milestone for me but also a celebration for everyone who had encouraged and supported me along the way.

Part 3

Time: 4-5 minutes

We've been talking about an important event in your life, and I'd now like to ask you some questions related to this.

What days are important in your country?

In my country, national holidays like Independence Day and the New Year are highly significant. Independence Day honors the country’s freedom and reminds us of the sacrifices made by our ancestors, while New Year’s celebrations symbolize a fresh start and are enjoyed by everyone.

Why is it important to have national celebrations?

National celebrations foster a sense of unity and pride among citizens. They provide an opportunity to reflect on shared history, culture, and achievements, bringing people together in a spirit of solidarity and joy.

How is the way your national celebrations are celebrated now different from the way they were celebrated in the past?

In the past, national celebrations were simpler and more community-focused, often involving traditional activities like parades and local gatherings. Nowadays, they have become more elaborate, with large-scale events, fireworks, and a significant presence on social media, making them more accessible to a wider audience.

Do you think any new national celebrations will come into being in the future?

Yes, it’s possible that new national celebrations could emerge to mark significant events like advancements in technology or environmental milestones, reflecting the evolving values and priorities of society.

Are there any celebrations from other countries that you celebrate in your country?

Yes, holidays like Christmas and Halloween, which originated in other countries, are widely celebrated in my country. They have become popular due to globalization and are enjoyed for their festive atmosphere and cultural appeal.

What are the benefits of having events that many people around the world are celebrating on the same day?

Global celebrations like New Year’s Eve create a sense of connection and shared joy across cultures. They promote understanding, unity, and the feeling of being part of a global community, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries.
